Stage performances are popular in churches, schools, and community centers. However, not every venue has a performing stage to accommodate a professional performance. A platform stage elevates the performance so that props, musicians, and actors can be easily seen by the seated audience. While it is possible to put on a show without a stage, it can be more enjoyable to your patrons if your performers are elevated and easier to see. If your venue of choice lacks a built-in stage, here are some options to consider.
Rearrange the Seating
Depending on the size of the audience area, you may be able to arrange seats in sections around a central performance area. With adequate space around the area and bright light on the performance, the audience may be able to enjoy the event if there is not a large crowd. Set the chairs back from the performing area and ensure the performers have microphones or speakers to carry the sound to the seated attendees. Occasionally, an open performance area can be highlighted for special scenes or individual roles and solos by providing a small wooden platform for the individual to stand on. This method works for smaller productions but if you plan on more people attending, it may be difficult to sustain a larger group and other accommodations may be needed.
Build a Makeshift Stage
Skilled carpenters who are affiliated with or are fans of local performances may be willing to build a stage for the venue. It doesn’t have to be extravagant or costly. Using wood planks and building supplies should be all that is needed for the job. A collection could be taken of those who attend performances, such as church members or community groups, to cover the cost of the stage. Sometimes professionals will donate materials or labor to support the performing arts.
If you have a tight-knit community, it can be easy to get people together to help build a stage. Additionally, you could consider having students from the local middle school and high school work on building a stage during school. If your school offers a woodshop program, this could be the perfect opportunity to give them a project to work on.
Use Riser Platforms
Risers come in seating or standing configurations for choirs or sports fans. There are also square or rectangular sections that connect to form a raised space for performances of various kinds. A skirt can be draped around the edges to hide the structural segments beneath. If the sponsoring organization doesn’t already have risers for sports events or other activities, find out how much they cost to buy or rent. This is a simple option and can be portable if needed.
Rent a Stage
A professional stage may be preferred due to the nature of the performance or the patrons who will be attending. If this is the case, you can rent a portable stage. While the previous options can work, sometimes it’s a good idea to rent out a stage so you can ensure the performance is visible for all to see. The delivery personnel can set it up for you, or you can have volunteers do it if they know how to. A portable stage transforms an all-purpose room into a performance area due to its quality look and structure. It’s a simple process to put up and can be beneficial to your production.
The performance arts are important to many different people. They can escape from the world for a little bit and enjoy a show. Start planning your drama, choral, or symphony events now by making plans for a staged area or platform.
